Design Ideas.

They asked me to make a design which would integrate the entertainers dream combined with a modern barn house feel. This sounded to me like timber structure in sight, a big fire place, opening up to nature and outdoor entertainment areas, and big barn doors.

Normally a barn house is basically a long shed orientated one way and very functional transformed into a house. As there was no existing barn, I designed it from the ground up. The location did give one exception as the land is on a slope, which means a conventional long shed directed in one way was not an option. Therefor I designed it in two separate buildings connected by same orientation, same materialisation, same form and same structure, so it still becomes one in appearance. The two buildings are connected by a glass hallway overlooking an inner courtyard. This courtyard gives connection with nature, makes the space feel bigger, and a real home coming feel (oases) when entering the house.

Further Explanation.

The front part of the house is the part with bedrooms and bathrooms where the rear part is pure entertainment and living. The living and entertainment area is one space but visually separated by adding texture and different materials like reclaimed brick and the timber structure in sight. Big French doors open up to the outdoor entertainment areas and gives magnificent views of the surroundings.

The facades at the front and the rear are dominated by big barn doors, which are not only giving the look and feel they are also very functional as protection towards the Southern Highland winds and cold drafts.
