Project Summary.

Urban Composition is a development within the Amsterdam Council initiative of ‘Selfbuilding’ opportunity. This allowed free aesthetics design whilst adhering to the ‘Zoning Passport’ – regulation, size, function and floorspace.

My design brief was to create a building which allowed a free choice of floorplan for future buyers. To achieve that, I created unique floorplans allowing the buyer to set the framework in which they could compose their own living spaces. The façade was designed with different options to give a choice per level e.g., smaller windows for your bedroom or for a kitchen. As a result, every level was unique.

To ensure uniqueness across every level, the facade was composed out of shifting rectangular shapes in different materials and shades.

The highlight of the facade is the box with the ‘web’ print. To make this unique box we laminated a foil with the web print, provided by 3M, onto an HPL (High pressure Laminate) plate. The plates are mounted on a timber frame construction hanging on tilting concrete floors.

The other shades in the facade are brickwork in 3 different shades, white, grey and black.

These floorplans show the diversity within the different levels of the apartments. The two apartments at the front showcase the diversity between the buyers. The ground level contains the kitchen at ground level and living on the first floor, whilst the top apartment has all the living space on the top level.
