Design Ideas.

Pools are not always a focal point within designs. Sometimes it is more of an afterthought. But when you get the assignment to make a house around a lap pool it becomes the focal point and can’t be an afterthought.

A very clear starting point to start a new design. Working on a steeply sloping lot a lap pool becomes a great challenge as the level of the start of the pool is completely different than the level at the end of the pool. The land slopes 7m over 46m and the pool will be 25m long. The only way to stay within the zoning rules is to integrate the pool within the dwelling contours. That was the start of the design.

The sloping land backing onto a reserve asks for different levels to stay within the height limit of the zoning ruling. Therefore, the design exists out of two volumes with different levels. By separating the two volumes we created a large inner courtyard which will let more light into the house and gives the opportunity to create nature within the design. By ‘free forming’ a connection between the two volumes the inner courtyard will have an organic feel.

The base volumes are robust and solid and carry the building. It also houses the more private spaces within the organisation of the house. The organic formed ‘green’ cladded volume houses the more open spaces within the house. The living room, kitchen, entry hall, etc. are situated within this organic volume. Bedrooms, office, studio, etc. are in the private more rigid volumes.

With this organisation in floorplan and aesthetics the house is well readable and prevents stress within. Sensory is also integrated in this house design. Be angling the front façade the road noise of the busy street is diverted and the house becomes a sanctuary. A much needed must for a busy family.

To be continued.

Due to a busy schedule of the client, the design is on hold.
