Project Summary.

The opportunity came along to design a house at a beautiful piece of land. The existing long shared driveway set you up to discover and experience something special. Surrounded by beautiful houses in the neighbourhood this became a very inspiring place to design a house fitting and become one with the surrounding nature and the existing designs. The most common style is the Bowral style house, characterized by being a typical Australian classic country house with characterful details. This style is also the clients desired style and therefor I made an Interpretation of it.

Orientation is key to a good house. With that in mind I designed a house which opens up towards what is open and closes towards what is closed. In this case that means that the right façade adjacent to a long row of dense trees will be more closed and protected and therefor will house the bedrooms. Where the rear and rear left side are more opening up towards the existing trees and water dam and will house the living and entertaining areas.

To give the house the Bowral Style desired sun blocking awnings are a must as this is typical for this style. The front façade is North facing and therefor designed with integrated awnings which provide shade, but also nice porches to sit, a gradual transition from outside to inside as this is also the entry side of the design and give the design human proportions as the awnings divide the façade towards a human size height and give a cosy and approachable feel.

The indoor spaces are connected by function. This means that all living areas are connected by an open flow (no doors) and that the bedrooms are more closed off in a separate wing for protection and a secure feel during rest time.

The total design became a Bowral Style Interpretation by orientation.
